Birthday Girl by Murakami

"No matter what they wish for, no matter how far they go, people can never be anything but themselves. That's all.

One fine evening, doorbell rang and there was a parcel to be delivered for me. I was not sure who sent it and what is it, all I remember that is I did not ordered this one.

I took the packet, sanitized it and opened and Voila a book – that’s like Happiness arriving on door steps. I was still not sure who sent it but then remember I participated in a challenge on Instagram few days back where we have send books to strange so thought it might came from one of the book lover around the world.

Happy, Excited I read the title – ‘Birthday Girl’ by Murakami. I have heard a lot about Murakami from friend, blogs, websites but never got a chance to read a book myself.

So, here Universe gave a chance to me to finally read Murakami. This book wasn’t like others, it is a little 42 pages book about a girl in her 20’s working part-time as a waitress who is asked to deliver food to her boss on her birthday. It is a strangely satisfying story. The girl went to owner’s room , delivered dinner and upon knowing it was her birthday  he asked her to make a wish and he will grant that no matter what it is.

The girl did shared a wish and the owner fulfilled it but we are never told what it was although the girl’s life did changed after that. Was it because of the wish? What was the wish? Or did she worked hard to be what she is? Birthday Girl is a decent story. It’s well-written as always and I liked that Murakami took what initially seemed to be a mundane tale into a magical realist direction towards the end. It’s the kind of thing Murakami does so well and it also tied in perfectly with the birthday theme.

If you are looking for a little book or you want to pick a book to just to complete and on to you list. Do pick this one.

Happy Reading :)
