The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
People could behave how they liked, but Allan considered that in general it was quite unnecessary to be grumpy if you had the chance not to. – Allan Karlsson
I picked this book on recommendation by my brother, because I have been watching him everyday sitting on sofa with a book in his hand and laughing hard. I wondered what exactly can be in a book named “The 100- year Old Man and blah blah blah” (honestly, I didn’t even bother to read the full name).
But after few days , out of curiosity I picked this up and started reading, it was around 6:00 in the evening and then it was 08:00 and I was on page 100 , laughing all the way , surprised , shocked , a bit confused at moments but enjoying the adventurous journey of ‘Allan Karlsson’.
Yes, that is our hero – Allan Karlsson who on his 100th Birthday climbed out of his window in an Old Age Home and disappeared to give us this blissful journey packed in 396 pages written by ‘Jonas Johnson’.
The chapters start about what's going on with Allan (the old man) now, at age 100, where he was convicted for triple murder during his run out from Old Age Home are interspersed with chapters about his many adventures in the past as an explosive’s expert. In his extensive worldwide travels he meets and befriends Franco, Stalin, Mao Tse-Tung, Presidents Truman and Johnson, Churchill, etc. etc. and plays important role in important world events.
The way Jonas compiled the events and described the political events in a such a simple way that a person like me who is least interested in politics can enjoy is commendable. Very easy to read, will keep you amused almost non-stop and somewhere it reminds me of the movie Forest Gump (a bit funnier version though).
This book have everything from friendship, love, solitude, politics, Action, Suspense and I would say read no more reviews, go order the book, have a cup of tea and enjoy the adventurous journey with Allan, his friends, an elephant and a dog :)
Happy Reading
